I could be in church right now. This very moment. The church I go to has services between 10:45 a.m. and 12 p.m. and right now it's just minutes before that starts. It's just a mile or two away. It's the church I went to when I was young. It was my mother's church. But... Continue Reading →
My oldest brother died back in 2015 at the age of 72. He loved to laugh. He would have gotten a kick at some of the things I overheard at his funeral. "We are all on a train in life. None of us chose to get on this train but this is where we find... Continue Reading →
A bad day at fishing is nearly as good as a good day doing just about anything else. - Me When I was real young I would sit with my dad on the old pier (the old causeway bridge) at South Padre Island, Texas and watch the tip of our fishing rods. That was, as... Continue Reading →
I walked into a Starbucks today for the first time in forever. Nothing has changed. Why do I do this to myself?
Ladies, I have a question. When did the world run out of pants for women? I mean they still have some right? You know, the kind with buttons, zippers, and pockets? Or were they outlawed and I missed the memo?
I don’t hate yoga pants. I really don’t. I won’t let my daughter wear them but that’s me. I just find it strange that I am pretty sure that every women I have ever seen in yoga pants probably doesn’t do yoga. They just wear the yoga pants. Seriously, what’s wrong with real pants?
There are these 4 ladies that come in to one of the Starbucks I frequent always wearing yoga pants. They are usually together with at the most one of them missing. They are all in their late 20’s or early 30’s, all very pretty, and none of them do yoga (they look too damn stuffy and…

This is my dog. Her name is Jessica. It's official. I now know more dogs by name than I know people in my neighborhood. About time too. Not that I talk to the dogs anymore than I do the people. I don't. But dogs names are easier to remember and real dog people get a... Continue Reading →
What time is it? (from a letter to a friend) I went by my old house the other day. A relative and her family have lived there for quite some time. It hasn’t changed much. There is a front concrete porch with 3 levels. A small sidewalk is part of it on one side and... Continue Reading →
315,155,280. That is approximately how many blades of grass there are in and around the area of the apartment complex that I live in. Give or take a couple. How do I know this? Did I Google it? Nope. Well maybe a little bit. But I assure you I did that only after doing extensive... Continue Reading →
Happy Father’s day to all you dads out there.
I saw my dad yesterday. I saw him walking downtown on Main Street in McAllen. He had on his khaki pants and a dark blue shirt on with the “Rodriguez Auto Accessories” emblem on it. He was wrapped a thin light brown jacket and walked with his hands in his pants pocket like he always did on cold days. I called out to him but he didn’t hear me. I wanted to tell him to zip up his jacket because it was a cold day and mom would always get mad at both of us when we didn’t close up our jackets in this weather. I knew it was him. I recognized his full head of white hair, his glasses, and that walk. He would kind of kick out his left leg a bit when he was in a hurry.
It surprised me when he walked past the auto part…

I lost my son at a Wal-Mart. It was 20 something years back. Don't worry I eventually found him. He's alive and well out there making his mark on the world, and still, so he tells me, making life miserable for his mom. Still though. I lost him once. And I can tell you for... Continue Reading →
